ORGANISATION OF THE CURRICULUM

In 1988 the Education Reform Act introduced a National Curriculum for all maintained schools, including our own Catholic Voluntary Aided Schools. The Act set out the subjects that must be taught and the arrangements for testing each pupil's progress. Since then, the contents of each subject, known as The Programme of Study, have been gradually introduced and implemented and the assessments, known as the Standard Assessment Tasks or SATs, have been set for the children aged 7, 11 and 14 years. In additional optional QCA year tests are used to assess pupils progress.

What are the subjects covered by the National Curriculum at Key Stages One and Two?

NATIONAL CURRICULUM SUBJECTS: Content prescribed by Law (except RE)

English, Maths, Science, ICT, Design and Technology, PE, History, Geography, Art, Music, PSHE (personal, social and health education), Citizenship and Modern Foreign Language (statutory from 2010).

We aim to provide a balanced, broad and relevant curriculum for all pupils which is in line with the National Curriculum. Equally importantly, we want all children to gain enjoyment and motivation by their successes. During their four years at Cheadle Catholic Junior School all children will encounter a wide range of educational experiences which are carefully planned to cater for every aspect of their development.

MEDICINES

Following recent training and up to the minute advice we would like to advise that from now on parents must inform school should their child visit A&E, even if this does not include an overnight admission. We also request that school is informed of any change in medical condition i.e. if your child is diagnosed with a condition/ allergy or need. We trust that you will support us in this measure which seeks to further ensure the health and safety needs of your children whilst they are in our care. Current mobile telephone numbers must be updated to ensure our records are accurate. Thank you. (Click on to the link below for the new Medication Permission Letter).

MEALS IN SCHOOL:

Our kitchen provides a range of tasty, nutricious meals daily. A number of hot meal options are available in addition to a slection of sandwiches and Jacket Potato choices. A drink and a desert are provided with every school meal.
In support of our 'Healthy Schools Award' status, children are encouraged to select freely from the salad bar and fresh fruit platter each day in addition to their meal.
*Meals are to be paid each Monday, the money being put in a sealed envelope clearly marked with the child's name, class and the amount. Payment may be made by cheque, made out to STOCKPORT MBC please, or by cash. Credits due to authorised absence will be carried over to the following week.
*Children may bring a sandwich meal by prior arrangement with the Headteacher. For administrative reasons, a change from school meals to sandwiches or vice-versa is restricted to half term breaks and more than one change is discouraged. Please put requests for a change in writing giving at least one week’s notice before the end of term
or half term. Only those children bringing a sandwich meal may bring a drink. Drinks in cans or glass bottles, hot drinks/soups in flasks are not permitted for safety reasons. *Children are permitted to bring in a healthy snack for morning break.

Organisation of Classes
The school has twelve classes and teaching groups have traditionally been organised by age. The size of classes within each year group is reviewed annually, taking into account the number of pupils admitted.
The period, from 7 to 11 years, is, in National Curriculum terminology, Key Stage Two, made up as follows:

Year 3 - pupils 7+ years

Year 4 - pupils 8+ years

Year 5 - pupils 9+ years

Year 6 - pupils 10+ years

Pupils who are identified as having Special Educational Needs (S.E.N.) may receive the support of the Learning Support Service and the Educational Psychologist employed by the Local Education Authority, after prior consultation with the parents. This may involve work within the classroom or withdrawal for individual and/or group teaching.

The total number of hours spent on teaching each week is twenty three and a half, including Religious Education, but excluding time for registration, assemblies and breaks in the morning and for lunch.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

The school offers a wide range of activities to the children both within the school curriculum and after the school day. We are involved in inter-school competitions for Netball, Football and Cross-Country Running (September to April) and for Rounders and Athletics (May to July). All pupils take part each year in the swimming programme at Cheadle Baths.

After school sporting activities include Multi-Sports, Cross-country, Football and Netball. Science Club, Eco-Club and our new International Club are also offered after school.

A visiting music specialist runs a school choir club aand orchestra; these operate for approx ten sessions each term and a nominal charge is made for each session. The children have the opportunity to perform songs they have learnt in a musical concert for parents.

A short tennis coach organizes lessons for year 3 pupils. Tuition is offered in the Violin to Year 4 pupils, Flute in Years 5 and 6 and the Guitar to Year 6 pupils.

Educational visits to places of interest are arranged and other visitors are invited to the school on a regular basis. An extended residential activity week-end is offered to Year 6 children in June each year. Other trips which take place annually include visits to 'The Lowry Exhibition' to study his work, Bramhall Hall to consolidate learning on the Tudors, Longdendale to study rivers and environmental issues and the Halle Orchestra.

Where costs are incurred for activities which form part of the school's normal curriculum no charge is made. Parents will realise however, that a voluntary contribution will be requested in cases where substantial costs are involved and where not to do so would mean that the activity or visit could not take place.

Through our sports coach, Mr Phieffer, we are proud to offer multi-skills fun week during school holidays (not Christmas) where children can opt to attend on a weekly, daily or invidual morning or afternoon session. Please contact the school office for details.

A copy of the School's Charging Policy statement can be inspected in the school by prior arrangement with the Headteacher.
