Safety Message

We would like to remind parents to be vigilant about the safety of their children on the way to and from school. We have had an alert today following an incident involving two of our pupils who were travelling to school. The children were very sensible and alerted us to the suspicious behaviour of a white van driver.

We have investigated the incident and contacted the local authority. This matter has been taken seriously and we would ask parents to remain vigilant in escorting their children to and from school.

Sad news

It is with great sadness that we share with you the news that Amy Watson-Wright, a year 6 pupil at CCJS, has passed away.

As many of you will be aware Amy battled brain tumours over the last 4 years; her brave fight ended on Easter Saturday morning when she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Amy's bravery throughout her illness was remarkable. Those of you who knew her well will know that Amy's bright, bubbly personality and wonderful sense of humour never failed her, even in the most difficult times. We feel truly blessed to have known her and to have shared in her life. The courage of the Watson-Wright family throughout this most difficult of journeys has been truly inspirational. We know that our school community will keep them in our prayers.

On Saturday afternoon we posted letters to every one of our school families, informing them of this tragic news. A service will take place when pupils return to school as a  celebration of Amy's life. Fr John, Fr Chris and Fr Paul will help to support our faith community through his sad time.

We ask as a school family that you keep John & Lydia and Amy's sister Megan in your prayers. Any cards for the Watson-Wright family should please be sent into school; where they will be passed on.

Ofsted

As parents will be aware the school was recently inspected by Ofsted (6th and 7th March).

The report, which was made available this week, states "This is a Good school".

We were thrilled that this latest inspection recognised the schools’ continued success in sustaining high standards and good progress. The four key areas of Achievement, Teaching & Learning, Behaviour & Safety and Leadership & Management were all judged to be ‘Good’. We would like to thank our wonderful staff for their continued hard work and dedication, not just during the Ofsted process, but in the years since our last inspection. We would also like to thank the children for their hard work and eagerness to show the school at its best – the inspection team commented how polite, well-behaved and articulate our children were. We would like to thank parents for taking the time to complete the questionnaire – the inspection team were impressed by the high return rate and concluded that parents were overwhelmingly positive and supportive of the school. As with all inspections, areas have been identified where the school can improve further, we will be working on those issues in the coming months.

Support for Parents

We have added some top tips for Reading with your children at home to the Parents Page. We hope you find them useful.

We have also added some materials you may find useful to support Safe Internet Day 2012 on 7th February.

Exciting Events 2011-12

Science Week - The school held another exciting and innovative ‘Science Week’ earlier this term. The theme of the week was “Movement and Motion” and many of our children researched the topic in order to create excellent posters as part of our Science Week competition. We had a number of visitors to school who led a series of workshops throughout the week: - All year groups were treated to a workshop with ‘The Birds of Prey’; here the children had a chance to observe, and in some cases handle, birds of prey from across the globe. All of our pupils also watched an entertaining performance by Quantum Theatre Group. In addition to these workshops our children carried out a wide and varied series of experiments in their own classes – the week was a tremendous success and our thanks go to Mrs Howarth for organising it so well and her class for launching the week with their informative assembly about Galileo and his many investigations.

Lenten fundraising - We would like to thank our families for their great generosity in supporting our charity fundraising during the season of Lent. The sale of the Marist wristbands and other ventures has raised over £1000 for St Charles Catholic School in Lwanga, Gambia.  We have encouraged our children to develop their entrepreneurial skills by working independently on fundraising ideas. Ideas have included children making and selling popcorn, candyfloss and cakes; running competitions; holding their own penalty shoot out competitions, making ‘copper penny’ lines and much, much more. We are pleased and proud of their hard work and dedication to raise money for others.

Throughout February our Year 3 & 4 classes have all been to visit Cheadle Hulme Library in preparation for World Book Day. The children have been learning about the Dewey classification system to support their research skills. Thank you to the many parents who offered their help to escort the children to the Library.

On 29th November, our Year 5 children took part in an amazing day of Dance and Music. ‘Border Moves’, a multi-cultural performance group gave the children the opportunity to play African drums and explore Jamaican percussion; they also led an Asian Dance workshop.  The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and entered into all of the activities with great enthusiasm.

As part of their History Topic on the Tudors, our Year 4 pupils paid a visit to Bramall Hall for a Tudor Christmas experience. Dressed in period costume, the children set off for a day immersed in the life of a child during the reign of Henry VIII.

Every class in the school went to St Andrew’s church to experience the wonder of ‘The Bethlehem Trail’. Peter Fraser who our children know from our ‘Bible Encounter’ assemblies led the children on a magical tour of ‘ancient Bethlehem’ in order to bring the story of Christ’s birth to life. We would like to thank the army of parent’s helpers who helped escort each of our classes to St Andrew’s and back.

On Saturday 3rd December the school hosted our Local Parish Association Day of Reflection for the ministers of The Word and Eucharistic ministers.

School Council 2011-12

The school council elections took place earlier in the term and our new council (consisting of a Councillor and a Deputy for each of our 12 classes) has been very active. The children have already held a number of meetings this term including one where they discussed ideas with our Chair of Governors, Brendan O’Shea. The children were instrumental in implementing our new House system in school – they decided upon house names and established rules for rewarding (and removing) house points. The four houses across the school are Trafalgar, Hadrian, Westminster and Buckingham. Each week the total scores of each house are added up and each term the House Cup will be awarded to the highest scoring house.

Charity Work

Marist - Fundraising

Sister Anne and Anne Tipper from the Marist Centre came to share some exciting news with the children back in November. The Marist mission is to live the Gospel after the manner of Mary and they asked the children a question from St Matthew’s Gospel “When your neighbour needed you were you there?” The resounding answer was YES! Following on from our Lenten fundraising last year we were able to support the Marist Sister’s mission in Gambia. Thirteen Greater Manchester Catholic primary schools in all responded to the rosary challenge and shared mission rosaries with families and friends thereby raising money and the promise of prayer for St Charles Lwanga School. Anne and Sister Anne showed the children video footage of the school and the children who were now able to go to school thanks to our generous support.  We will continue to support St Charles Lwanga School through our Lenten fundraising 2012. The staff of CCJS are donating the money they would normally spend on Christmas cards for one another this year towards sponsoring a pupil at the school.

Anti-Bullying Week

Children across the school explored the anti-bullying message through a range of role-play, art and speaking & listening activities. The main message of the week was ‘Stop and think – words can hurt’. We ran a competition in school to design a poster to get this message across – the 12 fabulous winners of the competition have their prize winning posters displayed on the main corridor.

Vive La France!

Basking in glorious sunshine typical of the French Riviera, the children of Cheadle Catholic Junior School held another hugely successful French Day on Friday 30th September.

Spending the day learning French songs, playing traditional French games, sampling foods and even constructing famous French monuments out of spaghetti – the children fully immersed themselves in French culture.

What a wonderful way to celebrate European Languages Day!

Year 3 pupils enjoying Le Petite Dejeuner.

History Day: 17th June 2011

We have had a  a wonderful day today celebrating our first 'History Day'.

Visitors from across the centuries spent the day in school... we had Vikings, Ancient Egyptians, World War II Evacuees and Ancient Greeks!

A full report on the days activities will follow shortly!

Year 6 Fundraising helps village in Kenya!

During Lent our Year 6 children took part in a range of fundraising activities to support a charity suggested by Bethany, 6H. Bethany's dad works for a bank who sponsor a village community in Kenya.

Learning all about the village and finding out what it was like to be a child in rural Kenya was a huge learning experience for our pupils and when they discovered that there was no running water in part of the village they decided that they would like to help.

We presented the charity with a cheque in May and were delighted to receive a message earlier this week from Anne, a member of the village community, thanking the children for their support:-

"Am very very excited to inform you that Water is finally connected at the village.
The villagers are so happy that they are singing and dancing about it. Over 100 villagers have benefited-----they will not have to walk long distances in search of water.

It's not only the villagers who have the water. All the neighbours where the pipes were passing through have water too----a big miracle for them all. In total, about 300 people have water now------THANKS TO THOSE CHILDREN WHO HELPED.

We did not get the water from Gituamba Secondary School, as the supply there was not enough. We took from the main pipe / supply, abit further away.

Kindly let those children know that what they have given the grannies and their neighbours is more than Water-----also LIFE. The grannies say that they will live to remember this act, their grandchildren will also.

They all shout with one voice------GOD BLESS THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE THIS TO US!!!!!.

I will forward photos.
Anne. "

Well done to all of our children who worked so hard to raise almost £400 to make this possible - we are all very proud of you!

Green fingered Eco-club

Our school Eco-club have been busy bees in the garden over the last few weeks putting their green fingers to the test!

The children chose to use the Morrisons 'Let's Grow' vouchers to purchase some fruit trees and bedding plants to develop our garden area further.

Earlier in the year we held a 'Design a Garden' competition and Mrs Jenny Johnson used these designs to landscape and create the garden area to the front of the school.

Royal Wedding Fun

We celebrated the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in style here at Cheadle Catholic Junior School in a fun-packed day which was rounded off with our own version of a 'Street Party'!

The curriculum for the week was based around this historic event and lessons included researching the family tree of House of Winsor, planning and budgeting a party, designing and making a crown and assembling a wedding dress out of recycled materials!
